What Are Common Causes of Clogged Drains?

Clogged drains keep your water from flowing freely and it can lead to costly leaks in the pipes connected to sinks, tubs, and garbage disposal.

The number one culprit for clogged drains is hair, especially when it comes to the shower drain. Using a drain screen is your best defense to remove hair before it gets to the drain. It's also a good idea to do regular cleaning with chemical cleaners or natural home remedies to prevent hair clogs and maintain your plumbing.

If your kitchen drain is clogged, oil and grease build-up may be the issue. Over time, oily and greasy residues from food can build up on the interior of your drain pipes. The build-up will eventually create a blockage, requiring a professional plumber's attention. For this reason, it is best to dispose of any grease or oil in the trash rather than down the drain.

Food particles do the same thing to the kitchen sink drain. Be sure to scrape off dirty plates into the garbage bin instead of putting them down the garbage disposal. It's also good to use drain strainers to trap food and other debris before it's sent to the pipes.

Soap build-up can cause a slow drain in both the shower and kitchen. You can use baking soda and white vinegar once a month, and be sure to thoroughly rinse soap residue each time you shower or do the dishes.

Setting up good habits for managing your sinks and drains with a combination of preventative practices and proper cleaning will keep your pipes running freely and help you avoid costly repairs.
